Involvement The Sandy River Chapter is involved in local fish enhancement projects as well as community service. We work hard to maintain the reputation of being an organization that doesn't just go fishing but contributes to the efforts to rebuild our fisheries, educate other anglers, help kids in need, and clean up our rivers. Some past projects include:

Sping Cleanup 2009 On Saturday 25 April 2009 fourteen members of the Sandy River Chapter
of the Association of Northwest Steelheaders conducted a cleanup of general usage
areas and beaches of Lewis and Clark and Dabney State Parks and Troutdale's Glen
Otto Park as well as the pull outs on the highway along the Sandy River. This effort
was the Chapters support of and coordination through SOLV as well as our close association
with the park staff of all three parks. As you can see from the photos this was a
worth well effort. The trash from Dabney State Park, which mostly came from the
island off the beach area, is not shown because it had been picked up by park staff
before I got there to take photos. Thanks to all the great guys that came out to
help. Some of these left before the photos. The total crew were Roger Beal, Larry
Beaver (the retiring river cleanup chairman), Howard Berg, Dave Bisacre, Ed Fast,
Tom Gemelli (our new river cleanup chairman), Jim Henderson, John Hyddrn, Mike Lane.
Mike Myrick, Russ Nishitani, Lucas Roare, Mike Shields and Colonel Thomas. Kids with Cancer Camp 2006 Congratulations are out to the more than two dozen Sandy River Chapter members who generously volunteered this summer for the fishing programs at Camp Angelos on the Sandy River. Our chapter contributed over 540 hours helping the kid’s fish for the two Kids with Cancer Camps, the Fishing Camp and the Greek Kids Camp. Everyone that helped was really appreciated, even if it was just for a three hour shift. Besides Howard Berg and Larry Beaver who co-coordinated the camps, significant help came from Jim Bergstad, Mike Myrick, Tom Gemelli, Roger Beal, Hal Blenn, Howard Anderson, Ron Tomlinson, Art Iraelson, Arne Soland, Norm Ritchie, Bill Cluney and Steve Ackley. Bill Hof was one of the members working with Jim Tenny teaching the kids fly fishing during the Fish Camp. The Sandy River Chapter can be really proud to be such a great fishing organization which not only fishes and enjoys fishing but gives a lot back to the community in our many volunteer projects. Here are all of the members who volunteered at this year’s camps. Howard Berg, Larry Beaver, Jim Bergstad, Mike Myrick, Tom Gemelli, Roger Beal, Hal Blenn, Howard Anderson, Ron Tomilinson, , Art Israelson, Arne Soland, Norm Ritchie, Bill Cluney, Steve Ackley, John Aho, Steve Stewart, Ching Wu, Bill Beath, Jeff Stoeger, Jeff Kirkman, Charley Carbajal, Colonel Thomas, and Paul Bush. Let’s keep it up guys and gals.
Fall Cleanup 2006 We cleaned up the Sandy river at Glenn Otto park, Dabney Park, and at Big Bend. It was a good day out and we found a good amount of garbage so it was time well spent. If we could just convince people to not litter in the first place!

If you can't lift it, drag it! Spring Cleanup 2003 As cleanups go this was a good one. There was not a lot of large trash. We found a good number of wheels and tires, various bottles and the like. Overall things seemed pretty clean. But when you pile it up at the end of the day its amazing how much trash there is. Twice a year we clean up the Sandy from Oxbow park down to the powerlines. It's at this point that we start fishing. Sometimes we catch fish sometimes we don't. But we unfortunately always find trash. It helps clean up the river and we have a great time doing it.
